Chesham RUFC

3 - 14

(HT 0-0)

Witney RFC

Witney Travelled to Chesham to start the second half of the season, influential lock Scott Mortimore injured (speedy recovery Scott) gave the chance of a debut for young Finlay Ayris . Witney supporters looking for a big away win were quickly reminded of the old saying there’s no easy games in this league. Chesham forwards dominated the scrums, and Witney were on the back foot. Looking rusty , Witney barely got into the oppositions half , poor handling letting them down when they did attack. With frustration growing Witney conceded a penalty  18mins and a good wind assisted kick by Tom Hirst  gave Chesham an early lead. This lead was maintained by some excellent rear guard defending as Chesham piled on the pressure in the last 5 minutes as Witney manged to prevent a try with 3 held up over the lines decisions as the first half came to an end. 0-3

The second half with the wind at their backs started with Witney looking in a more dominant mood. The half couldn’t have  started any better as the first try came from a kick down field by Witney where the young Chesham full back gathered the ball , ran over the try line and seemed to be in two minds unsure to give away a 5 m scrum or play out of the situation, Tom Gaffney wasn’t in two minds he tackled the Chesham player who  dropped the ball and Rhys Morgan grateful touched down. Tom Puddle added the extras 3-7

Now feeling confident and the Christmas Turkey well behind them, line outs being won good use of the ball from the backs and Rhys Morgan now getting space to run at Chesham the boys pushed on a scrum, won by Witney was the platform for the next Try as Centre Matt Clarke was feed the ball and a strong straight run brushing off tackles allowed him to score under the posts and with Tom Converting the score line was looking a bit more respectable 3-14. 51 mins  Chesham who had played well all afternoon pushed on but were unable to get to the try line and the game closed out by Witney.

The potential banana skin avoided Witney look forward to facing Didcot next weekend
