The long-awaited season started with an away trip to Banbury in the Southwest 1 East league.
The local fixture was a chance to take the 2nds across for a friendly which the dually won 24-12
The first team looking vastly different from the league winning team started well despite an early Banbury Penalty on two minutes 3-0 we were 3-5 up after 7 minutes with a Jack Strong try.
7 minutes later we were 10- 5 down only for Ben Gordon to level the scores at 10-10 after 17 minutes.
Banbury then took charge and after 65 minutes the score was running away at 48-10.
Witney cheered on by a large away support didn’t stop and the ever-green Rikki Dore popped up with a Try 48-17 after 73 minutes. This only led to Banbury pushing on and the score went to 60-17
Witney not giving up despite injuries to Mortimer and Holford scored with the last play to make the score 60-24 with Alex Swancott scoring and getting his second conversion
Meaning Witney at least gained the 4 try bonus point.
Banbury gave us great hospitality before the game and by the look of things will be once again pushing for top spot. Witney welcome Newbury this coming weekend. It will be Newbury’s first league game as this weekends game away at Grove was cancelled
