Buckingham RUFC

21 - 28

(HT 0-0)

Witney RFC

Witney gained a victory at a very beatable Buckingham but were made to work for it After a well attended and successful Chairman’s Lunch, , the game kicked off.

The first quarter of the game was a predictable arm wrestle between the two sides with play centred on the halfway line, but on the 17 minute mark the Witney number 11  (Rhys Morgan) was able to sprint over for a converted try (Oliie Brian) due to lazy Buckingham defence not moving across quickly enough on the nearside of the pitch.

After the kick off Witney continued to attack and a good break down the far side of the pitch nearly led to another try, but for a brilliant tackle from Buckingham’s Will Ellis, which led to a Buckingham scrum. This seemed to spur Buckingham on as for the rest of the second half, the momentum swung toward the men in green and white. Several line-out drives and good scrummaging near the Witney line, however, never bore any fruit, and despite good aggressive runs from most of the forwards, Buckingham could not get over the Witney line.

Witney  started the second half well, putting pressure on Buckinham  again  a deliberate knock on from Buckingham led to a yellow card for Olly Topley. The penalty was kicked to the corner and Witney went over from the line out to put the score at 0-14  Jake Edwards Try Ollie Brian conversion. Buckingham started to work their way out of their half after the kick off, but then another mistake lead to a Witney interceptionas James Merriman  who raced in unopposed for a try under the posts, 0-21 Ollie Brian Converting

This seemed to wake Buckingham up and following good play and a line out in the Witney corner Buckingham full back Wiggy went over for a converted try. 7-21. This was quickly followed by a strong try from the rampant James Bell, who ran well all day. 14-21. Witney then started to come back and again scored a driving lineout  James Merriman  try Henry Lambe Conversion to lengthen their lead to 14-28 with 10 minutes to go.

The rest of the game was all Buckingham, with the younger players obviously the fitter. Consistent pressure from Buckingham lead to a beautiful break by Matt London and looking certain for a try he ran towards the line. However, a Witney hand managed to knock the ball from his hands to deny him. Not to be deterred, however, he was back again within a minute and this time was not to be denied, with a more characteristic bullish charge at the line. This try was again converted to make the score 21-28. The last 5 minutes were all Buckingham and the home supporters were really hoping for one last try to draw the game; however Witney managed to hold out. and pick up 5 points
